A Web of Silk!

This is so incredible - a cape, as well as another garment, made of actual spider's silk - millions of female Golden Orb spiders and not one injured - they are released back into the wild after the silk is collected. This fabric took thousands of hours to weave and embroider, three years. Amazing and beautiful.

The spider is one of my totem animals and plays an important part in some of my magickal workings. Of course, I also weave - wouldn't I love to get my hands on some of this silk - oh the possibilities!

Celebration of Inanna

Today is the celebration of the Birth of Inanna. A Summerian Goddess, Her name means Queen of Heaven and She is a goddess of love, fertility and war. Her myths and stories are easily found through various books and internet search engines so I won't go into great detail here, just briefly share Her myth. What I really want to share is how I honor Inanna on this day and what She has given me.

Briefly, when Inanna descends into the Underworld to reluctantly visit her sister, Eriskegel, a sister She was not close to, it was to offer compassion and comfort. Eriskegal's husband, in one myth, has abandoned Her; in others, He has died. She is mourning his loss, angry, suffering. As Inanna descends, She is required to leave, at each of the seven gates a piece of Her attire, Her crown and then Her clothing. She arrives at Erishkegal's throne, naked and vulnerable. Again, there are various interpretations of the myth - Eriskegel, fearing that Inanna has come to usurp Her role as the ruler of the Underworld, kills Her. In other myths, Eriskegel is so angry because Iananna has never visited Her before and, in that anger and grief, She impulsively kills Her sister. In any event, Inanna dies and Her corpse is hung at Eriskegel's throne. When Inanna does not return after three days, a servant goes to Enki, Her father, and tells Him what has happened. He creates two creatures from the dirt beneath His fingernails, sending them into the Underworld with the Food and Water of Life. They offer compassion to Erishkegel, who is comforted and grateful for this, offering them whatever they want. They ask for the corpse hanging on the wall which She gives them. They proceed to revive Inanna with the Food and Water of Life. Inanna then asks that She be allowed to return to the World and Eriskegel consents, but only if someone will return to take Inanna's place. Inanna agrees.

When She returns to the World, Inanna finds that Her own beloved husband, Dumuzi, instead of mourning Her, has usurped Her throne. In Her anger She sends him to the Underworld to take Her place. However, as She considers this and calms Herself, She realizes that She has made a mistake and wants him back. Eriskegel has also had time to consider and realizes that Inanna had come to visit to offer comfort, so She agrees to release Dumuzi, but because the Underworld is what it is, he can only return home for half the year. Each year Inanna must return to Eriskegel's world to revive him, renew Her own vitality and return to the Earth each Spring to bring fertility and life to the Land.

There are many lessons in Inanna's myths. At this time, in celebration of Her birth, I embrace the Winter to make my own descent into the Underworld and within myself. I make a conscious effort to cast off seven issues that I may be over-focusing on, allowing them to be released for a time, setting them into the Earth to lay sleeping. I then recovered them, renewed and revitalized, even changed in whatever way needs changing, later in the Spring.

At times I need to just stop, let go and stop worrying. This ritual assists me in doing this. These issues are not issues that must be permanently released, but issues that need restoration, ideas that need revitalization. In Inanna's honor I do this as She is wise, inspiring and knowing. Perhaps She left Her myth as an offering for our healing and regeneration. Perhaps that is nature of all goddess myths.

Solstice Thoughts

I need some sprinklings of healing magick. Every year, after the big days - the Solstice, Christmas Eve and Christmas, I feel this let down. This year is a bit worse - the autumn and Yuletide season just flew by leaving me rushing along behind, never quite catching up.

I'm not alone in these feelings. I've spoken to many folks who feel the same and there are a lot of them out there - where did the time go? Is it that we are older? Is it the fear of 2012 that so many seem to have? I personally have no issues with 2012 because I know exactly what happened with that calendar!

So... this can't be the problem. ; ) What's going on? Just weird energy swirling around us? I don't know, but what I do know is that this will pass and I will be back to my old, feisty, effervescent self in no time at all. And that's the name of that tune!!!

In other news - and there seems to be plenty - I continue working on my project, A Book of Artes and Charms. I have three gals that want to be students/apprentices and I've decided with my magickal partner that we shall take them on. This is something that we really hadn't been interested in before, but these gals are just the right ones. They have that excitement and enthusiasm, the "I just can't wait" energy, it's quite lovely. Multiple tarot readings have been encouraging this path over the last eight months, so here we go. In addition, my partner and I will continue our "inner court" workings.

Stitching wise, well, I have not two, but three large projects just starting: Sampler Sisters of the Thread as mentioned before and only one line done, Autumn At Hawk Run Hallow not yet started but being carried everywhere I go, just in case, and A Marriage by Lizzie Kate. A Marriage will be stitched in time for our 32nd wedding anniversary at the end of May. I saw this on line, called my local shop and found that they had it. I scooted right over there to pick up the chart which comes with all the threads. It calls for 32 count Lambswool linen which I just happen to have an abundance of. The DH drove over with me which was a good thing as I left my wallet at home!!! However, that curtailed my shopping spree a bit. This is very different from what I usually stitch. I prefer traditional or primitive type designs, reproductions of antique samplers - that sort of thing. This one is much more modern looking, to me, but the verse is exactly what my DH and I always say about our marriage. So.... onward stitches! Of course there are a few smalls thrown in for a break such as "Cake For Jane Austen" by The Sampler Girl and a some others from various magazines and on-line freebies. I really plan to knuckle under and not buy anymore charts - well except the two whizzing there way from Europe, oh and Last Stitch Cemetery by Hinzeit - so adorable, I just couldn't resist, LOL, but it isn't quite the New Year yet so it's all good. No comments from the peanut gallery, hehehe!

In any event, our Christmas Eve and Christmas day were both quiet, just the two of us and it was quite lovely. Christmas Eve dinner was spinach dip on crackers, pigs in a blanket and mini bagel pizzas along with homemade egg nog, shortbread and fudge for dessert. We then lit the fire and sat side by side, rocking, chatting and dozing a little, Sterling B at our feet. Christmas Day we slept in a bit, exchanged a couple of gifts, relaxed and chatted on the phone with relatives. Not a bad holiday although I did miss my Christmas Eve open house. Oh well, maybe next year, but we shall see. I really enjoyed just the three of us.

December - Introspection and Celebrating

So much is happening this December. There seem to be so many goddesses to honor while participating in the mundane celebrations as well. Tonight, for example, is the Celebration of Creation, honoring Spider Woman, She who created the world and all within it. Although I do not follow a Native American path, She is a "goddess" who has always drawn my attention - the needlework, the weaving and spinning. I could not possibly not honor Her. She is a Crone, seated at Her spinning, benevolent, although sometimes known to be destructive - as are all Crone goddesses. She bestowed the gift of weaving upon Navajo women, although She is honored by many tribes. So tonight, I will weave something special and unusual in Her honor, taking on the attributes of the spider to cast my threads, weave and stitch. It is said that Spider Woman guides the hands of those who pursue Her craft. It is traditional to rub the hands of baby girls with spiderwebs so that Spider Woman's gifts will be passed on to the child. For myself, I rub my hands with these webs before beginning a ritual of this sort. Different tribes honor Her differently, but for most, She is considered the Great Creatrix who watches over all Her people and Her world.

I will also make offerings and pay homage to Sapientia, the Roman goddess of wisdom on the 16th. Her festival was held each year on the eve of the Saturnalia, which I do not celebrate, but honoring Sapientia is very important, especially this year. I feel that I have been given many insights, lessons, much wisdom and many blessings throughout this year - some painful and tough to get through, but most joyously amazing. I have had a change in my journey that is so very important and is bestowing incredible experiences upon me, giving thanks on many levels, to many goddesses and spirits take precedence over everything else.

My annual Nine Nights Hallowing of the Winter Solstice will begin on the 18th, three nights of dusk, three nights of darkest night, the second night of this, the actual Solstice, and then three nights of the dawning. I've changed the days a bit and made some other changes in my ritual aslo, accommodating the changes in my path.

Of course there is Christmas Eve and I still haven't really decided what I will be doing. We usually have a large open house, but with other commitments, I think I will just invite a very few friends to enjoy some savories and sweets along with good conversation. This means we WILL have enough lasagna for Christmas day! In the past, when serving it Christmas Eve, my quests ate almost the whole pan!

My solstice tree is still not up, despite my best intentions, but will be by Friday. Why, you may ask? A very good reason. A special little being - 38 inches long and quite beautiful - has joined our family, a Ball Python I've named Circe. Due to the creation of a special home for her, I had to pull apart book cases and move furniture. Finally, everything is settling in, including Circe who has given her first shed to me. I can now make some interesting charms. She has a very sweet energy and I hope we will be doing some interesting work together. I know, I know, some of you are saying eew, yuck among other exclamations!

In addition to the above, more mundane tasks of baking, candy making and making sure those I love have wonderful goodies for the holidays. So... onward with this joyous and lovely season!

Goddess Remembrances for December!

December 1st is a day to celebrate and honor two goddesses: Athena, the wise one of the Greek pantheon and Pietas, the Roman goddess of virtue and duty.

In honor of Pietas, consider what your duties are; to yourself, family, friends. Your most important duty is always to yourself, If you are not true to and honor yourself, you will never be able to do so for another. Light a candle and some incense as an offering and ask Pietas' blessings that you may fulfill that which is your duty.

Athena is also honored on December 1st, in Her aspect as Pallas Athena. Offer cake, barley cake if possible, rosemary and wine. For me, Athena is very much the weaver - a weaver of women's strength. Call upon her to aid you in standing up for yourself and speaking out for what you need.

On the 3rd, we celebrate Bona Dea, the Good Goddess, mother, nurturer, bestower of blessings. Apples, incense of sweet spices, honeyed, spiced wine make very good offerings. Be sure to give a little something to those less fortunate.

This day is also sacred to Cybele and Rhea, Great Mothers of the Earth. Call upon Them, honor Them with hymns, poetry and prayers. Milk with honey and spices make a lovely libation for Them.

December 7th is the Haloia of Demeter, a bit somber as She mourns the loss of Her Kore, wandering the earth in search of Her daughter. Light candles, offer barley and herbs as well as sweetened wine. Mourn with Her, but remember, as the seasons turn, Kore, the maiden, becomes Persephone, the Queen and Mother of the Dead. She will return to Her Mother in the Spring. Offer prayers and poetry of comfort to Demeter.

And that should keep you busy for a few days - it certainly will for me!

This and That

So... I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving. Mine was nice. We went to my husband's cousin's club - an incredible spread - turkey, ham, salmon in a cider glaze and probably the best prime rib I've ever had. There were all the traditional trimmings - stuffing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, real cranberry sauce, green bean casserole and other side dishes I didn't/couldn't try.

The really phenomenal part of the meal was dessert. OK, for some this is always the best part; for me it just depends if there are mashed potatoes. If there are mashed potatoes, well that's the best part. But I'm getting away from the dessert - two rooms of desserts. Yes, really.

A good third of the various desserts were chocolate - chocolate covered everything - pretzels, fruits of all kinds - grapes - I couldn't eat those for some reason. I only took one because I thought it was a truffle. Why chocolate covered grapes seem so weird to me I cannot tell you. There were also kiwi slices, pineapple, strawberries and, believe it or not, carrots. The carrots were dipped, as were the fruits, half in chocolate. No, I didn't have any chocolate covered carrots or fruits. If I'm going to overdose on sugar it won't include slices of fruit.

There were cakes, pies, cookies, candy, custards... on and on - enough to overdose on in the most spectacular fashion. The coffee was especially good and finished off the meal nicely. I showed off photos of my little, cutest baby on the planet, grand nephew over that great coffee. He's six months old and is standing already, yelling for his dada. His father's response to the post on FaceBook was "Oh sh*t." The older adults of my family - me included - are laughing madly!

There was one big problem on Thanksgiving; my husbands cousin, the host of our dinner, did not or actually could not attend - he has kidney stones and was passing one as we feasted. Really. His wife was with us and kept tabs on him via cell phone. He has many more stones. My husband went through this a month ago. A kidney stone gives men a taste of giving birth, or so I am told, never having experienced either - and by the blessings of the goddesses, never will. We spent the remainder of the evening with my husband's aunt, 89 and sharp as the proverbial tack - seriously, she's quite brilliant and we love spending time with her.

My mother went north this year to be with her youngest sister as my uncle, her husband, died on the 14th. I can remember being a very little girl when he and my aunt were dating and my sister and I both wanted to marry him. We were only 4 and 5 years old, I think. He was quite wonderful to us, but in our teens, teased us unmercifully. I married a man very much like him in that respect. They became good friends. My uncle was a great fan of Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons, so I've always loved them too. Very strange, my aunt and uncle became engaged in December, 1963. Many years later, Frankie Valle and the Four Seasons recorded "December, 1963, Oh What A Night" - now that is pretty interesting. We're very sad and miss him. I hope he and my dad are having a heck of a time together.

Into the shop Friday morning - the first time in almost thirty years that I've worked the day after Thanksgiving. Quite a day, as was today. Even in the magickal world, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are important days. People certainly bought gifts for others, but we still sold a lot of ritual and magickal-type goods, the usual. I went to the grocery store early Friday morning to buy mineral water, but otherwise I didn't want to be near shopping centers, malls, etc. other than my own little place.

I only performed a short ritual for the Dark of the Moon and left offerings at the hedge, nothing very elaborate. While dedicated to Hekate, I am hearing the call of Neolithic goddesses once again and researching and experiencing some different ritual. I am also experimenting with some different magick. Someone from a cyber-group I belong to called Hekate the flavor of the month because so many people seem to be drawn to Her. She does seem to be making Herself known to many, but I think that expression, flavor of the month, is rather disrespectful. Neither here nor there for me, but I do feel She is steering me in other directions. I will just have to see.

Sunday I will begin getting the Toadstool into order for the winter holidays. There are some new magickal powders that need making, spell kits for Solstice gifts, winter pot pourri to mix up and other holiday tasks, including the Christmas pudding - an apricot delight with a couple of pounds of butter in it. This pudding of all puddings will sit in the fridge, being doused in rum every Sunday, until Christmas Eve. On that night, with one more good dousing, we set it alight and then pour on the potent hard sauce and enjoy. Sensitive individuals have been known to get drunk on that pudding! Pair that pudding with my Sleigh-Ride Punch - hot and also full of rum, well... that's what brought on the screaming with laughter and playing with those funny little ball and basket things until three AM last Christmas!

The winners of my give-away should have their packages sometime during the week. I am preparing for my Divine Feminine Discussion and Meditation group at the shop on Tuesday. So... there we are, up to date and ready to move along. What a ramble!!! And no rum was involved, I swear!

Small Stones

I have, in the past, participated in the Small Stones project. For the month of January 2012, they are having a challenge to write one small stone a day, A River of Stones. What are small stones you may ask? According to Fiona and Kasper, the originators of this idea, they are very short pieces of writing, prose, poetry, what have you, that capture a precise moment, setting off a burst of emotion in you. Of course, I jot these down every now and then, and when I saw this first thing this morning, it inspired a lovely memory from last week, evoking just such a burst of emotion perfect for one of these stones.

Tiny, beautiful ballerina, she finds a silk leaf on the shop floor, hidden in

a corner. Picking it up, she dances, tippy toes barely touching the floor,

tapping the leaf onto all the crystals.

"What are you doing?" we ask.

"I'm putting magic into my leaf," she answers.

Pomona's Magick

Today is the Feast of Pomona, a Roman goddess of fruit trees, especially apples, and abundant fruitfulness. She was considered to be a guardian of people, homes, gardens and orchards. Her name is from the Latin "pomum" - apple.

Of course apples have long been a symbol of many goddesses and their worship. It is appropriate at this time of year that we honor Pomona and the magick of apples, therefore I offer the following magickal suggestions.

Take apples, peel a few strips only of the apple skin, remove core and split in half reserving the strips of peel and core. Place in a baking pan, flat side up, add a bit of butter, sprinkle with cinnamon, cloves and/or a little maple syrup. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 - 45 minutes or until soft. While cooking and eating, ask a blessing from Pomona for good health, protection and abundance. Be sure to save a slice to be presented as offering.

Take the reserved peel and wrap it around a sprig of thyme or oregano, perhaps even both, and a cinnamon stick. Using a knitting needle or awl, gently pierce the rolled peel in three places and stick cloves into each hole. Bake in a warm oven of 250 degrees for an hour or so to dry the peel and herb. Once dried, the peel can be added to an autumn pot pourri, used as offerings or in charms. Keep nearby when performing any divinatory or oracle workings.

Apples - sacred to many goddesses and a symbol of women's magick; enhances loving energies, love magick, wisdom and protection.
Thyme - cleanses and disperses stagnant energies while attracting new and positive energies. Also assists in opening the third eye.
Cinnamon - enhances magick, aids magickal focus and connecting to other realms.
Cloves - purifies, repels negativity and hostility, elevtes spiritual vibrations.
Oregano - brings joy, protective, good for wards.
Maple syrup - a sweetener - sweeteners sweeten people and situations; maple's magick brings protective, sheltering energy, as well as encourages good health, longevity and balance.

Don't forget to bury an apple or two outside your home, offerings for both Pomona and your ancestors.

Hallows Journey

The rain falls down and down,

running, rivulets racing,

spattering leaves and windows,

patter, patter, whoosh!

Sheets of droplets scatter across the hedge.

The lake moves across itself.

Something opens, somethings calls.

I am weaving, casting threads,

clack, clack, the loom calls.

The threads move on their own,

twining about my fingers, wrists and arms,

dancing through my hair.

I am of the threads, their magick embraces me.

The dried corn on my door

knocks, knocks, knocks in the tireless wind.

Like a skeletal hand, bony and white;

Like a grandmother from the grave,

Holding high a lantern light.

Knock, knock, knock.

The Hallows bones… they are here.

I've lit the candles and sang the song,

the ghost roads appear before my eyes.

I've opened the portal, time to pass through the gate.

Home Again!

I have just recently returned from a trip to North Carolina and a wonderful visit to a couple of old friends. I spent long hours looking at buttons and antique sewing tools, talking and visiting various locations and events. I also had my other half take some playful, fun photos - such as above, I couldn't resist. The weather was chilly - mid thirties at night and only into the forties during the day. I was pretty comfortable though, participating in that time of a woman's life known as perpetual summer! In the above photo, which was taken on the road back from Hendersonville to Brevard after some antiquing, I wrapped up in my wool cape and posed appropriately - in my opinion! ; )

A too short meeting at the arboretum with my MoonMaid herbalist friend, Cynthia. We had a long, lovely chat, discussion of goddess and witchy issues and just generally caught up. She gifted me with a beautiful book of flower lore while I presented her with a Jim Shore Garden Fairy and a little silver pin of gardening tools. She lives on a mountain, growing a wild garden and preparing her products, mainly for women, but her ouch ointment in quite famous; my own husband is a great fan. We are hoping for a visit again in the late spring or early summer which will include a trek to the MoonMaid's mountain abode. (see moonmaidbotanicals.com for more info about her products.)

My other friend, with whom we stayed, is a close, close friend of many years. We met in the eighties when she and her husband owned an antique shop at Miami's historic Cauley Square. The four of us became very close and spent a great deal of time together; we were partners in crime, so to speak. Bill passed away some years ago and we certainly miss him. They moved to North Carolina almost twenty years ago, got out the day Hurricane Andrew hit Miami-Dade County, but it always seems like no time has gone by and we pick up where we left off. We stayed up to too late talking, but it was a warm and wonderful visit.

I attended the Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival and have finally obtained a rigid heddle loom - yay and thanks be to Athena! I also picked up tips on my drop spindle spinning and hopefully, next year, will add a spinning wheel. Right now I will focus on my weaving. There were lots of wonderful like-minded folks at the festival, all friendly and willing to share information and tips. Needless to say the fibers and other goodies were gorgeous. My husband enjoyed himself tremendously and carried goods back and forth to the car. We found the soap maker we bought soap from a few years ago and laid in a good supply. Plenty of holiday gifts were purchased too. The following day we were off to the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands in Asheville. Beautiful art! Added a few handmade wooden spoons to my collection including a very long, large spoon and ladle that will be very helpful to my apple butter making this week.

Sigh! I didn't want to leave North Carolina. Miss it and my buddies Helen and Cynthia already.

Well, life moves on and Hallows is a day away, followed by Pomona's Day when the apple butter making shall commence! I celebrate Hallows over a number of days - from the 31st through the 11th this year. Honoring the dead and spirit contact are a priority, readying myself for the introspective time of the winter and making certain charms only done at this time. There is a ritual to put together yet and getting my dear other half to drill hazelnuts, incense to make along with offerings and the libation brew.

Oh.. and of course I'm gearing up for a little give-away so keep in touch as it will be announced on Hallows with the drawing on November 11th!

In the meantime, gathering apples for my apple butter making which will commence on Monday. I also bought a loom - yay!!! Finally! She's a 25" rigid heddle loom and I can't wait to get started working on her. More about this and other interesting adventures of the Witch of Stitches later on!

- a blog I started reading a short time ago. Ragen, of Dances With Fat, writes about fat acceptance, being healthy at any size, body image issues and... she's a dancer! Read the blog post. it will be good for you, no matter what size you are. Really. You'll likely go back and read her other posts too.

Ragen is SO inspiring, not just for big gals, but for everyone. Now, when I practice my ballet routines, I just think of Ragen and I dance joyously, without feeling self-conscious. I see the beauty of my movement, the lifting of arms and legs, the gentle turns and twists of my flowing, moving body. What a great thing! Now I'm making choices without obsessing, based on what is healthy for me. The need to be thin to be anything worthwhile has disappeared like smoke from a snuffed candle - wisp and away. Now I can take care of myself just because my life is worth it, because I want to care for it without thoughts of becoming an impossible to achieve size. I don't have to be anyone's image of beauty but my own. My mindset seems to have shifted with the reading of her words and the thoughts they provoked. I have cast a spell with Ragen's help.

What is my image of beauty? Someone who is happy, voluptuous, perfectly, pleasingly plump, abundant and beautiful with confidence and self-worth, full and satisfied with herself - myself.

Like Mayal Angelou, I still rise - I rise on my toes, I rise in my thoughts and my whole being... and I will keep on doing so.

Flying in to say Happy October! Things have been hectic with Rosh Hashanah, preparing charms, stitching, trying to teach myself to play the bowed psaltery, practicing the dulcimer (found a little three string to add to my instruments) and brewing potions. I haven't gotten out of the kitchen much with brisket, matzoh balls and eye of newt. Oh... and I decided to try to organize my desk - my motto - a tidy desk is the sign of an empty mind - so you get the picture.

Ritual Thoughts From the Autumn Equinox

Last night we gathered in our Sacred Temple, a place made Holy by the many rituals and workings done there. In that place, where the Goddesses have been invoked and honored, where the Ancestors and Spirits of nature around us and the Other realms, seen and unseen, have been honored, once again we made that space sacred to honor the turning of the season and welcome the Autumn of the Year, the waning time, the descent of Persephone into the Underworld, the mourning of Demeter, Her Mother, and the guidance and magick of Hekate, the Cosmic Soul.

We traveled into the dark realms, the inner and deep Earth, where healing, nourishment, fear, danger and knowledge of the Mysteries awaited us if we had the courage and abilities to find our way. We descended into that place belonging to our Matron, Mistress of the Three Realms, Queen of all Magicks, Cosmic Soul and, in fact, Dame Fate, Herself.

She took us for an intense ride, but Her blessings were upon us as we traveled the Ghost Roads in search of ourselves and the path She has laid before us. May we be strong and able to achieve the tasks She sets us. For we are Hekate's daughters, by blood and bone, by spirit and choice, our choice and Hers! So we proclaimed it and so it is, by the waning moon, by the waning year and sealed with our blood!

To all of you, a blessed and happy Autumn Equinox, Harvest Home and Second Harvest. May you know abundance in all that is most important in your lives. The Witch-flame of Hestia

As the Autumn Equinox approaches, I am planning my rite and celebration for this, the Witch's Thanksgiving and the second of the harvest festivals. Unlike many Pagans, I do not celebrate Mabon because it is a Celtic-inspired celebration. As I am dedicated to the Dianic Goddess path, I choose to honor those Goddesses whom I feel represent the mysteries of this time of year - Hekate, my matron Goddess, Demeter, who has given us the harvest and Persephone who begins Her descent into the Underworld.

In Ancient Greek religious rites a flame was always lit for Hestia first and extinguished last - for Hestia, thine is the first and last. Leaving the patriarchal overtones of Hellenic Greek religion, I keep this honoring of Hestia who blesses hearth and home. I am the keeper of the flame in my home, she who nourishes and sustains my little family guided and blessed in this role by Hestia. Both the hearth and stove are kept sacred to Her - a reclaiming of woman as Queen and Mistress of the Home. A woman may do anything she chooses today, any profession or none, being a mother and wife or remaining single, independent and free even when sharing her life with a partner. This includes honoring herself as the priestess of her home.

Before beginning any rite and also once weekly, I light a special flame for Hestia, to honor Her and show my devotion. For ritual workings, this becomes my witch fire; for the blessing of hearth and stove, a simple prayer and offering. I share here the invocation I use for the Equinox.

Invocation to Hestia For the Autumn Equinox

You, Hestia, the Keeper of the Sacred Flame,

I light this flame in Your holy name.

Happy September! Ah... how I love the change from August to September. The great wheel of the seasons slowly, slowly moving. I look forward to certain tasks - changing the quilt on our bed, mixing a new cinnamon and clove pot pourri. I also pull out my worn and spattered recipe for apple butter, waiting for new apples to arrive. And then... pomanders! Those clove studded oranges that leave my fingertips stained brown and scented with cloves and orange no matter how many times I wash them. Delish! They add that wonderful orange spice scent to my home along with the apple butter. Oh... and my favorite Fanny Farmer Apple Cake recipe - also spattered and worn - scrumptious, buttery and spicy. Casseroles, stews, soups - all the recipes come out and so what if it is still warm outside? Inside, Autumn is about to arrive! It all makes me feel so Septemberish. Ah, if only I could live in Autumn all year long!

And, of course, there are magicakal tasks too; brews, herbal blends to prepare; spells and rituals to review - all for the coming season - The Autumn Equinox and Hallows; dark moons and full moons.

So tomorrow, upon rising, the September tasks begin! A delightful day ahead.

Marjoram in Magick

Marjoram

Most people have this herb in their spice cabinet. For the kitchen witch, it is a wonderful herb to cook with as well as an excellent herb for magick. It will help in spells for a variety of issues. Named after a city in Sicily, it is a common plant found everywhere.

For protection, marjoram is quite powerful. Sprinkling the herb into corners or on window sills and at doorways, about the house or work place, will keep away bad luck and protect the inhabitants from harm or malicious intent. One should vacuum or sweep away each month at the new moon and replace with fresh.

Sicilians believed marjoram could banish sorrow. For grief, sadness or even mild depression, place some of the herb in a small pouch or square of cloth, add an apache tear and tie up. The buds of Balm of Gilead can be added to enhance the charm.

Around the home, add to food along with basil to ensure peaceful, happy energies for the family. It is especially useful for keeping love strong. Drink as a tea to gain love, happiness, healing, wealth and all good in general. Add to pot pourri with rose petals or tie up in a square of cloth and hang on the connubial couch to keep marital relations harmonious.

For those dedicated to Hekate, Saturday's Full Moon holds special meaning - it is Hekate's Night, a night to honor our great Goddess, She who bestows many gifts upon those who honor Her, including magical abilities and prosperity. A Simple Way to Honor Hekate by Pythia Hecateira

In whatever guise Hekate presents Herself to you, regular devotions are an important part of spiritual practice. A simple, basic way to do this is offered here for you.

You may perform your rite indoors or outside; if working indoors, take and leave the offerings and libation outside. Offerings of any of the following or combination thereof are suggested: garlic, eggs, almonds, barley, pomegranate and/or seeds, figs, dates, apples and olives as well as the wood and/or leaves of willow and yew. A libation can also made to Hekate. Prepare wine, cider or even tea, laced with honey, spices and herbs. I am drawn to use dark sweet spices such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and, for some reason, oregano. Prepare the offering plate and libation in advance.

Begin by sitting in some quiet place, lighting a candle and incense. I suggest calling out Hekate's various titles as listed above under appellations - choose those that most resonate with your experience of Her; She presents Herself to each of us differently. Invocations, poetry and/or song may be offered as well as quiet contemplation. Petitions can made and meditative or other workings done, including divination. When you have finished, take the offerings outside after making a blessing over them. The libation should be placed in an offering cup or chalice, placed on the ground and gently tipped over to flow into the earth. The offerings should be placed directly on the ground as well. These offerings and libation can be left at a place you find sacred. A crossroads is an especially powerful place to leave the offerings for Hekate; a quiet intersection, where you can place them safely, would be appropriate. A entranceway, opening in a fence or gate, as well outside your door would also be appropriate. When you have placed the offerings and made your libation, walk away and do not look back, especially if you have made some petition.

Give thanks, snuff your candles and have something to eat to ground the energy you have raised. As Dion Fortune said and I paraphrase, there is nothing like food to ground the magic and bring one back to the mundane.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that until a woman reaches a certain age she does not qualify for certain discounts available to her elder sisters. Dear reader, I now qualify! Yes, indeed, yesterday I reached the big 55. A "dear" friend sent me, just a few weeks ago, a completely amazing list of all the discounts one qualifies for when reaching the ripe and wise age of 55. The majority of these are not publicized, but they are available if one asks for them - such as 10% off at various chain restaurants, etc. She also sent discounts for those 65 years and older as my darling other half reached that milestone a few months ago. Friends, they are so dear to one's heart!

As some of you know, I am married to a nice Jewish guy - in fact, due to the Jewish by injection factor, many of my Jewish friends tell me I'm more Jewish than any Jew they know! Hey, when I first married I intensely studied How To Run A Traditional Jewish Home by Blu Greenberg! Of course, for years I have been working on my own version, The Witch's Guide To Managing the Pagan-Jewish Home, but that is neither here nor there. It was inevitable with so many Jewish friends and in-law relatives, I would become one of the tribe - in my own way, of course! Anyway, the point of all this, I think, is that it is with delight that I discovered, from one of the many Jane Austen blogs I read, a new version of Pride and Prejudice - P & P, The Jewess and the Gentile by Lev Raphael! As the author says on his webpage, http://www.levraphael.com/pride-and-prejudice-jewess.html, get ready for Pride and Prejudice and brisket! (Now that's cute!) Our lovely heroine, Lizzy, is a nice Anglo-Jewish gal with attitude, Mrs. Bennet is a Jewish mother and Mr. Darcy is himself. Can it work? I immediately ordered it on my Nook - how could I resist? If it turns out to be as hilarious as described, I will order a hard copy for my collection of JA take-offs. I am beside myself - yes, again!

In other, less mundane news, Hekate's Night is the 13th and a full moon. We are planning a major ritual, of course. Since our little coven is dedicated to Her, this is a major celebration. I know many devotees around the world will be celebrating as well which will make for an energetically intense event. I will be posting a simple ritual to honor Hekate in a few days for those who wish to celebrate but have not done so before.

Later in the month, coinciding with the New Moon, I will begin a monthly women's gathering for discussion, meditation and even a little magick focusing on the Divine Feminine. Dark Moon Blessings

Another dark moon ritual lasting into the wee hours. No, it isn't the new moon, not yet, at least for me - that will happen when the first crescent appears in the sky. We dedicated our ritual to Hekate, of course, did a little divination and left offerings at the crossroads. Raven's partner prepared a lovely cassoulet, some of which served as our offering to Hekate - meat, beans, onions, garlic - along with a libation of Strega liqueur. Yes, of course we had our little nip too. We were even given a little omen - a frog jumped right across our path as we made our way to the car. There are reasons why I think this is a good omen, but I will not elaborate. I drove home in a haze, tired after a long day, reeking of incense and oil and feeling that our divinatory session was helpful and motivating.

August is around the corner. My Festival of Demeter the Bountiful on August 1st, a birthday, my 55th (can't believe it) later in the week, Hekate's Night on the 13th along with the Full Moon - how lovely! I am a true ritualist at heart so, as busy as I will be, it will be labors of love.

It has been a busy month and the rest of the summer looks to be the same. This week I am at the shop three days caring for the crystals and advising in my capacity as "Resident Witch" - I love my job! It seems like we were just honoring the Dark of the Moon and now, here is the Full Rose Moon, a moon I love celebrating! This is so much a women's moon, for me and mine anyway.

There are quite a few names for July's Full Moon, in fact Rose Moon may apply to June as well. In June I celebrate The Moon of Fruit and Flowering, which is a celebration I created myself. Here are some other names for July's full moon:

For our celebration of July, the main theme is the Rose Moon, but adding Claiming and Blessing as well. The altar is dressed with roses, both fresh and dried petals and buds. Rosewater to cleanse with and a special rose blend oil for anointing are also included. We invoke the Goddesses with a calling out of Their names and the energies we associate with Them and claim our power and worth with a prayer for affirmation of self-worth. Offerings, a libation and divination are included among other things.

As our coven is dedicated to Hekate, we naturally honor Her, but include other Goddesses as well, such as:

Aphrodite, Persephone, Selene, Hestia, Sulis, Rosmerta, Lilith, The Fates and Ananka. Yes, this is mixing our cultures certainly, but for this ritual, we honor ALL Goddesses, of all cultures and all women. For us, it's our Dianic/Feminist thing!

I hope you are blessed by the feminine power of the rose this full moon.

To Obtain A Lover

To Obtain A Lover Who Will Be Forever True

You will need a red candle in the shape of a witch

A thimble

A small square of red cloth

A nine inch length of pink ribbon

Three drops each of the essential oils of rose and jasmine

added to a thimbleful of finest olive oil.

A small bowl with nine dried rosebuds, nine dried jasmine flowers,

and nine whole cloves,

each as perfect a specimen as you can obtain.

To these, add a thimbleful each of cinnamon, damiana

and scrapings of dried orange peel.

This will be your offering with a bit taken later to make a sachet

to keep for yourself.

Beginning just after you see the first crescent of a New Moon,

anoint the candle with the perfume oil as

you call upon one of the Hidden Company to assist you.

Be respectful. Do not be greedy.

Request the help of only one,

one who is sympathetic to those longing for love.

To the small bowl of flowers, spices, herb and fruit peel,

add some of the perfume oil as well.

Light the candle each night and burn for 13 minutes

chanting the following charm over and over,

Red Witch of flame, burning bright,

Hear my request upon this night.

An offering sweet I make to you

To bring me a lover forever true.

For me to hold and me to keep,

One whose love for me is strong and forever deep.

Extinguish the candle by pinching or snuffing after 13 minutes.

Do not blow the candle out.

Continue burning the candle for 13 minutes each night

until it is spent and will burn no more.

From the offering bowl, remove a thimbleful of the offering

and place on a small square of red cloth.

Gather the cloth into a sachet by bringing the corners together, giving a little twist,

then tie up the cloth with a pink ribbon, nine inches in length, making nine knots.

Gather any remnant wax and add to the offering bowl.

Take the bowl to some private place, better a hedge or crossroads,

and scatter the offering there, saying:

Red Witch who was of the flame,

Accept this gift from a daughter of the Dame!

Turn three times widdershins while looking at the night sky,

then walk away without looking back.

Hide the sachet of red cloth in some secret place,

such as the drawer that holds your undergarments or stockings.

As the longest day of Summer fades into memory,

We've spent the warm day in forest and meadow,

Gathered our John's Wort, vervain and rue,

Plucked trefoil and roses too, and seeds of fern.

Then we crush the seeds with herb and flower,

Blandan well wax from the bee and tallow fat.

Dancing, we chant the great charme of power,

Into the woods we once again travel,

Framed!

I have a stack of finished needlework projects that need finishing - it never ends, or so it seems - doesn't stop the needle from flying though. Some are being stitched into little goodies and a few others were taken to my LNS, Cross Stitch Cupboard in Fort Lauderdale, for framing. They do a wonderful job and are a great shop, always helpful and so knowledgeable - if you can't figure out a stitching issue, they certainly can! I also photographed some other witchy stitches that hang around Toadstool Condo; I thought you might enjoy seeing them. Some are from a number of years back, all are dear to my heart!

A little freebie design from an alphabet found on line, that I adapted and changed into something a little witchy!

A design by Lisa, may she be on a wonderful journey, of The Primitive Needle. She passed away a few months ago when swept away in her car by a flash flood. I have many of her designs. I was working on this when it happened and so have dedicated it to her memory.

And some old favorites including the witch wall, not a great photo, but there's no other way to photograph it as it is a hallway between the front door and dining/living room area. It is very narrow. All witchy designs - and a few pieces of Jewish art for my darling dear! We mix it up at the Toadstool!

Mike gave me another Jim Shore witch, this one called Wicked, with a flying monkey, a few years ago for my collection. I then found this little stitch to go with it - just perfect! Instead of stitching the broom, I added a silver broom charm. There's also an old, very old, Cricket Collection design of a cute little witch next to it, to which I added a little crescent moon button - can't seem to stitch anything as designed.

And this is the work I designed for my article, The Ritual of Stitching, which was published with the chart in The Beltane Papers in 1997, I believe. Again, not a great photo due to the hallway, but you get the idea. I am planning to self-publish the chart in the very near future, so if you are interested in obtaining the chart so you can stitch this little blessing, let me know. There are a few specialty stitches as well as some leaf charms, but you could use small leaf buttons - or anything else you like!

And finally, another designer's work which is changed, if not beyond recognition, then not exactly what she had in mind and too long ago to remember which one! Blackwork, cross stitch, specialty stitches and a verse from Lucius Apuleius, I believe - my contribution to the designs, which is a favorite.

So there we have it, witchy stitches! Most, except for the first three photos, have been framed for many years, but I thought I'd share them anyway. The last was an offering for Hekate, our Great Lady!

I am in the midst of my annual Vestalia celebration. The hearth has been cleaned physically and spiritually, and will be re-consecrated tomorrow evening. As for our stove, it has been scoured within an inch of its life; the oven burns away - self-cleaning! The ashes will be strewn in the wind during Friday night's ritual and re-consecration will follow. The altar also has received its share of dusting, rearrangement, additions of new items and removal of others. Each goddess statue has been bathed physically with a special brew, the base of which is rosewater followed by spiritual cleansing; re-consecration will take place during tomorrow's ritual as well.

Why this celebration? The hearth and stove really are the heart's flame of the home, any home and especially mine. The stove is where I prepare our food, to nourish and nurture, many tinctures, infusions and decoctions are prepared there along with other magickal brews as well as baked offerings. The hearth brings warmth of heart, contentment and it is a place of many magickal workings as well. It is also the center of our home. Sacred flames are lit there many times during the week and my daily devotions are performed there. Naturally, I will honor one of the goddesses who is keeper of this place; the other being Hestia.

I have prepared my version of the mola salsa and will use it as an offering tomorrow night as well as a dusting for the pork roast that will be prepared, offered and eaten over the weekend.

I also honor, at this celebration, the Vestals themselves, who kept the flame alive and the temple sacred. They gave a great deal of their lives and incredible dedication, so I include those priestesses of long ago in my veneration.

In other world-of-stitching-witch news, I finally had some stitching framed and will be posting photos tomorrow. Currently I am stitching like a madwoman, Madame deFarge or Bertha Rochester in her attic - did she stitch? And yes, I know, Madame deFarge knitted. Well, you get the idea. A baby sampler for a shower on June 11th for our newest family member. It is a quick, but really pretty stitch and I am just about done. The problem will be the framing, but I think my LNS, Cross Stitch Cupboard, in Fort Lauderdale, will come through for me - IF I can get this finished in the next day or so. I WILL DO IT!! In addition to this, I am stitching another quick but pretty stitch for my sister - a first time granny sampler. I wanted to get them both done together, but didn't find the designs or decide to actually do this until last week! Oh well, it would be nice to present them together, but if I can't, so be it. I'll send it later.

Now, as for the little man, cutest baby on the planet!!! I ask you, are these not just adorable? Love these photos!!!!

Really, our family just produces adorableness in abundance!!! I am not bias at all, BTW.

Dark moon magick on the horizon tomorrow and more magic later in the week with Raven; and, of course, spells and magickal advice at the shop where I now have a regular part-time position - Saturdays & Mondays with an extra day thrown in here and there. It's just perfect and a dream come true after years in medical offices. Resident witch - what a great position, LOL! And that's what my week has in store for me! Abalone

Not a crystal or stone, but a seashell - and a beautiful one, indeed. It has a rather flattened shape with the outer shell looking funky and organic, while the inside is jewel-like. Due to the shape, it is sometimes called "sea ears."

The water element is strong in shells, making it a perfect ally for healing emotional issues. The blue and green colors found within are calming, settling overactive emotions and chakras. Lay the shell over the chakra, adding other crystals as needed. Abalone's energy is soothing, not overwhelming. It heals the emotional body by re-aligning the energy so it flows gently, assisting with the release of what is no longer beneficial and allowing what is to flow freely. It is especially effective for survivors of traumatic situations and also for those who are resistant to or fearful of making needed changes. It can work to heal the heart chakra by gently releasing sorrow, feelings of loneliness, loss and being unloved. For me, shells are womb-like, holding a life within, therefore they carry mother-goddess energies. This may be why their energy brings comfort and peacefulness .

Abalone is also helpful for divination and oracle work, it's reflective iridescence stimulates intuitive and psychic abilities through the third eye. Shells may also be used for scrying, gazing and meditative work.

In magick, abalone can be used in love spells or any other spell involving emotions. Place your charm ingredients in the shell or make amulets of abalone jewelry for your various needs. If you find broken shells or jewelry, grind and add to magickal powders.

Abalone shells make beautiful offering bowls, but I advise against using them, as many do, to burn sage, resins and other incense. First of all, the burning damages the beauty of the shell. Why would you want to do that? Second, this womb-like shell was the home of a life, the spirit of that life may still be attached to it, ready to assist you. Burning it may likely damage that connection and is disrespectful. Allow this shell to work its water element magick by being seen and reflecting its beauty and energies out into our lives.

Her Sacred Fires!

I gathered my wand, cauldron, Hekate's statue and other paraphernalia, then out the door I went to drive to meet Raven. We would celebrate the Rite of Her Sacred Fires.

Last year, after my ritual, I went to leave my offerings at the hedge and found a toad in my path, waiting and unafraid. This time, a toad again made an appearance as I walked to the car. She waited for me to take notice and say a few words, then hopped off into the bushes. I thought it was interesting as I haven't seen any toads in a good long while. Then, as I opened the car door, a beautiful teal colored dragonfly flew around my head, tapped the car a few times and then disappeared into the sky. Ah, I said to myself, the magick begins.

And so it did. Raven and I had a lovely ritual at her home. We added an additional working and some divination to our rite, then took our offerings to the crossroads outside her home. A luminous moon lit our way, a gentle breeze stirred the trees to speak; an enchanted and enchanting night . Yes indeed, magick was there.

Hekate of the Three Ways, I invoke You,

Maiden of the Land, the Underworld & the Seas as well,

Chthonia, Enodia, Phosphoros,

Propylaia, Atropaios, Propolos,

Kourotrophos,

Newest Family Member!

A new family member has arrived, safe, sound and healthy! Carter Jay arrived on May 11. This is my sister's first grandchild. Although we have a grand-neice and grand-nephew on Mike's side of the family, I've been waiting for one on mine and now... here he is!

May begins with the great celebration of The Greening of the Goddesses and Beltane. My celebration last evening, was solitary and quiet, but very meaningful. The hedge was alive and stirring.

Earlier, Sunday afternoon, I had a great longing to be out of doors, which I indulged with a visit to a local nursery. I picked up some herbs, including a nice stevia plant and a large oregano - a favorite herb! It is already very hot here in South Florida and I was sweating and blotting as I roamed about - oh the fifties, the sweat years of a woman's life! The heat felt good though, just what I seemed to need, I allowed the heat and sun to soak deeply into my bones. Listening to the fountains and looking at the water plants, I have begun planning an indoor water garden once again. We then went off to the garden department at Home Depot, where I picked up a sweet little Rabbit's Foot Fern and a little planter of mixed plants while looking at more fountain/pond materials. All plants are resting comfortably, including the oregano which is hanging close to my head!

While this celebration was quiet, the month ahead will be busy. Homage to Bona Dea and the Dark of the Moon on the 3rd, the Star Goddess on the 6th, Artemis on the 9th and the Rumanian Festival of the Fates on the 11th - that is one I never skip! All will keep me busy in the temple and at the hedge here at the Toadstool. On the Full Moon of the 17th, all over the world, devotees of Hekate will join together in The Rite of Her Sacred Fires for the second year. And just in case you think my needle has been idle, be at ease, that needle and my fingers have been flying. I am stitching a Hekate's Wheel on that lovely cognac colored linen I mentioned in a previous post, with black thread, which I will finish with a buttonhole stitch and little fringe around the edges. It will look lovely on our altar during the Sacred Fires Rite. Four projects have made it - finally!!! - to Cross Stitch Cupboard for framing. They have been lying in the basket of forgotten, finished needlework projects - well, at least it is a basket of finished projects! I continue with several dozen other WIPs (Queen of Perpetual Projects, that's me!) as well as making a scarf for my mother's friend and some collage and painting projects. Must not forget my Classics Challenge, I don't think I'll make the Master's Degree after all. I have finished three of my books and am half-way through the forth. Lizzie is busy.

Earlier this morning, I drew a tarot card from The Tarot of the Crone deck. I chose Temperance... hmmm... how very interesting, I think! A black-cloaked figure walks on a sliver of a green path under a dark sky illuminated by stars. On one side, a field of fire; on the other, a field of ice. The figure holds her hands out to each side, palms down, drawing up the power and essence of each.

This is a card about mystical journeying to spiritual illumination. Although things may not be as clear as I would like them to be, in time the answers will come. Patience, balance and discipline - that is what is required and what I have. Really? I am finding the balance that I need in my life. From the companion book, I find more messages from this card: I draw in opposing powers and combine them to create what is needed and desired. Fire does not burn me, ice does not cut me; nor do I put out the fire or melt the ice. I know the hunger of fire and the bite of ice, but neither consumes me. I know the boundaries, but I do not allow them to to pin me in place. The power and passion is living within me, now is the time to use that power in all I do.

I am the one who brings beauty to life. I am the one to walk my path. Temperance is a dynamic process, a moving magick, and it makes a life full of meaning. Interesting, indeed.

The Greening of the Goddesses!

While others are celebrating Beltane, I shall be celebrating my own version of May Day, The Greening of the Goddesses. For me, this is a celebration of that yearly, sensuous riot, the growth of the Earth; seeds splitting and sprouting, green, tender shoots dancing upward toward the Sun, the Sky, for early harvest, health and enjoyment. Now is the time of the great Earth Mother, Demeter, in Her full power and majesty as She Who Brings Forth From The Land.

In addition, this is the time, for me, to cast my magicks to promote fresh, creative energies and inspiration - more projects of fiber, paint and words. All of this brought to fruition by Persephone's return to Her mother. Once again She wanders fields, breathing in the rich and redolent scent of flowers and herbs, listening to the winds, dancing with Her Nymphs, all the while, Her mother, Great Demeter, and Hekate, fond companion, watch and smile across the Land.

Ah, Spring settles in and Summer is not far behind. All the Earth is bustling with the business of creation and rebirth!

A Traveler's Charm & New Additions

For the third week in a row, I have had to travel four hours, each way, to my mom's home due to some medical issues she has been having. After a cardiac catheterization, we now know what the problem is and no surgery will be needed, thank the Lady, just some new meds. Ahhh, what a relief! No matter how old we are, we want mommy happy and healthy. She was off to bingo tonight, her usual pursuit on Wednesday evenings.

Whenever we travel, we always take a stone from around our land, awaken and connect with its spirit and ask that it protect and bring us home safely. We've been doing this for some time. Funny, the same two stones are always in the same place, waiting for us.

If you want to add this little ritual to your travel plans, just find a stone near your home, on your land; nothing fancy is needed, just a stone directly from the land. Awaken it in whatever manner you like; call to it, ring a small bell, whatever, then ask the spirit of the stone to lend its protection while you travel and return you safely back home. Place the stone just under the driver's seat, not so far that it can't be seen - you want to be reminded that it's there. When you return from your travels, and this is very important, thank the stone and return it from whence you found it. A small offering or libation would be a nice way to say thank you.

We also have some new additions to our family of wild life and they are just adorable! Their little peeps outside the window call to me twice a day, morning and late afternoon, as they make their rounds with mommy and aunts. OK, so they like the seeds and bread we can't seem to help giving them!

The end of another busy day and back to the comforts of the nest, wherever that might be!

Hazel Dickens, RIP

Hazel Dickens passed away yesterday, the 22rd, at age 75. Her music was sort of bluegrass/folk/old time with a bit of rebel and feminist thrown in. Her voice was full of emotion.There was something about that voice and the songs she sang that kept me listening. I think she was pretty amazing.

Well, good journey Hazel, I know you will keep singing wherever your journey takes you.

Magickal Clary Sage

An herbalist friend, Cynthia Johnston of Moonmaid Botanicals, introduced me to this herb and its medicinal properties many years ago. Specializing in women's reproductive cycles and issues, she taught me that clary sage is very effective for women's issues - especially menopause, easing hot flashes, cramping, etc. A note of caution: pregnant women should avoid it as clary sage has other uses that may be harmful during the pregnancy.

As a licensed esthetician, I use the essential oil in treatments for oily skin in my facial work, and also make an infusion, along with a few other herbs, into which I dip cotton pads and place over the eyes. Clary sage is purported to help eye/vision problems. The tea is also good for digestive upsets. A cloth dipped in a strong infusion or very warm water with a few drops of the essential oil, wrung out and placed over the tummy or sore muscles is very nice. Aromatically, it assists with emotional and psychological tension, easing anxiety and, according to some, helping with depression and high blood pressure. I like to use it in aromatherapy anxiety blends because of this and find it balances and restores so one can relax and release stress.

I have never had the opportunity to sit and work with the live plant and connect with its spirit which is the best way to know a plant. However, I've had good results with the dried herb and the pure essential oil.

In magick, clary sage is highly protective. Having it growing around one's home is a very good thing for a number of reasons. At the Alchemy Works website, they include a note about this herb - "this plant concentrates heavy metals from the soil and can be planted to clear contaminated areas. It should then be disposed of rather than composted" - naturally, as in magickal workings, one would not want to save what was used to cleanse. What a gift to your land or any land, to grow this herb to assist in cleansing it of toxins. Go talk to your plants, get to know them and ask them to protect your land and home. You should do this with all your plants and trees, build a relationship with them - they will tell you what they can assist you with on an energetic level.

For protection, hang bouquets of clary sage to dry around the house, place it in sachets with other herbs for protection, placing in appropriate places about the home or office. Carry a small pouch with clary sage and other protective herbs in your handbag and keep one in your car. For ritual work, it is a a potent ingredient when you want to cast a protective boundary. I generally add it to the warding blend I use for my home, placing it on window ledges and on top of door frames.

In spells, clary sage is an excellent addition to and has long been used in love potions and as an aphrodisiac. In my personal work, I have seen this herb as best used by women who want to attract a man - I suppose, since it is very much a woman's herb. Not all may agree with this assessment, but that is what the herb has taught me. Even an herb, collected, dried and handled respectfully, will maintain its spirit and be able to communicate with you.

Associated with both the moon and mercury, it has been my experience that it is very helpful in workings that include journey, trance, dream and visionary work, as well as divination. It can enhance psychic abilities. Sprinkle some of the dried herb around the table you lay your tarot cards, runes, bones or stones on. Crush a bit of the herb in your hands and inhale its fragrance. An infusion makes an excellent clearing and enhancing wash for scrying mirrors and scrying stones. Burn as an incense or use the essential oil in a nebulizer and to anoint the third eye during any of these types of workings to enhance your abilities and the reading. A drop or two on your pillow before bed can enhance any dreamwork and aid in the recall of those dreams, especially for divination purposes. It tends to make dreams very vivid when one is open to such work, so prepare yourself appropriately.

A note of caution, if you are going to use alcohol or other mood altering or narcotic substances during these workings - or in general - ingesting clary sage along with those substances may cause a stronger reaction. Use common sense and caution.
