I first saw this post on Facebook by Jenny Mendes Ceramics and was beside myself. This was a blessing to me and I fell in love with this little goddess. I want to know more about Her. My initial look didn’t turn up much so I have myself a new study task. I did see this same info on a couple of sites, so I am not certain who first posted this. Whoever did, I am grateful.

 The Great Stitcher with uplifted arms. This prayer is older than any with a name. A sacred artifact from Jiroft culture (ancient Persia, Iran), the oldest known temple complex, located in Iran. It dates back to the Bronze Age period and is estimated to be approximately 3rd-1st millennia BC. This ingenious image is carved from limestone. Who was the genius who created this masterpiece?!

8 Enoki, Align: Standing tall, there is strength in numbers, finding our tribe. Hmmm… this card really speaks to me. Sometimes we need to align with others, find our kindred, and we can make a big difference. Aligning with others gives strength to our purpose. There’s power in community, we can make a real difference and find that power by not going it alone, even if it is just finding one other person. A goal that seems too onerous to achieve alone, may be easier to accomplish with the strength and assistance of another… or three. A feeling of power and accomplishment comes from a good relationship with likeminded friends when attempting to achieve whatever needs doing. 

So who can we align with to help with dreams and projects.? Or… who can we offer help to? This is not a time to go it alone. Reach out to give or receive.

Festival of Broken Needles

Today is the Festival of Broken Needles. At one time, this Japanese Buddhist festival was honored only by tailors, now however it is celebrated by many who enjoy the art of the needle. I have adopted this festival as one of my own because of my interest and love of embroidery and hand sewing. Embroidery is a favorite pursuit of mine, however I love sewing by hand, even repairing a seam or sewing on a button is, for me, a great pleasure.  I have found two dates for this celebration: December 18th and February 8th. I celebrate on both dates. After all, I use many needles throughout the year

I gather my broken, bent, and/or used needles, end bits of threads from my embroidery, small scraps of fabric, and an offering of seeds, fruit, or bread. I give thanks to my needles for the work they have done as well as the goddesses that inspire my creativity. I bury the needles and place the small bits of thread, AKA "orts", on my hedge, hopefully to be used by birds or other animals for nests. The food offering is left in a sacred place near my hedge. I then return to my hearth, light candles for inspiration, and bless new packets of needles. I usually work on some embroidery as well and consider what a joyous little tool my needle is, how lucky I am to find such comfort and happiness in this art. A simple, but satisfying ritual.

While this festival is based on Japanese tradition, this particular ritual is my own creation.

Framed!

I have a stack of finished needlework projects that need finishing - it never ends, or so it seems - doesn't stop the needle from flying though. Some are being stitched into little goodies and a few others were taken to my LNS, Cross Stitch Cupboard in Fort Lauderdale, for framing. They do a wonderful job and are a great shop, always helpful and so knowledgeable - if you can't figure out a stitching issue, they certainly can! I also photographed some other witchy stitches that hang around Toadstool Condo; I thought you might enjoy seeing them. Some are from a number of years back, all are dear to my heart!

A little freebie design from an alphabet found on line, that I adapted and changed into something a little witchy!

A design by Lisa, may she be on a wonderful journey, of The Primitive Needle. She passed away a few months ago when swept away in her car by a flash flood. I have many of her designs. I was working on this when it happened and so have dedicated it to her memory.

And some old favorites including the witch wall, not a great photo, but there's no other way to photograph it as it is a hallway between the front door and dining/living room area. It is very narrow. All witchy designs - and a few pieces of Jewish art for my darling dear! We mix it up at the Toadstool!

Mike gave me another Jim Shore witch, this one called Wicked, with a flying monkey, a few years ago for my collection. I then found this little stitch to go with it - just perfect! Instead of stitching the broom, I added a silver broom charm. There's also an old, very old,  Cricket Collection design of a cute little witch next to it, to which I added a little crescent moon button - can't seem to stitch anything as designed.

And this is the work I designed for my article, The Ritual of Stitching, which was published with the chart in The Beltane Papers in 1997, I believe. Again, not a great photo due to the hallway, but you get the idea. I am planning to self-publish the chart in the very near future, so if you are interested in obtaining the chart so you can stitch this little blessing, let me know. There are a few specialty stitches as well as some leaf charms, but you could use small leaf buttons - or anything else you like!

And finally, another designer's work which is changed, if not beyond recognition, then not exactly what she had in mind and too long ago to remember which one! Blackwork, cross stitch, specialty stitches and a verse from Lucius Apuleius, I believe - my contribution to the designs, which is a favorite.

So there we have it, witchy stitches! Most, except for the first three photos, have been framed for many years, but I thought I'd share them anyway. The last was an offering for Hekate, our Great Lady!

In other world-of-stitching-witch news, I finally had some stitching framed and will be posting photos tomorrow. Currently I am stitching like a madwoman, Madame deFarge or Bertha Rochester in her attic - did she stitch? And yes, I know, Madame deFarge knitted. Well, you get the idea. A baby sampler for a shower on June 11th for our newest family member. It is a quick, but really pretty stitch and I am just about done. The problem will be the framing, but I think my LNS, Cross Stitch Cupboard, in Fort Lauderdale, will come through for me - IF I can get this finished in the next day or so. I WILL DO IT!! In addition to this, I am stitching another quick but pretty stitch for my sister - a first time granny sampler. I wanted to get them both done together, but didn't find the designs or decide to actually do this until last week! Oh well, it would be nice to present them together, but if I can't, so be it. I'll send it later.


Now, as for the little man, cutest baby on the planet!!! I ask you, are these not just adorable? Love these photos!!!!

Really, our family just produces adorableness in abundance!!! I am not bias at all, BTW.


Dark moon magick on the horizon tomorrow and more magic later in the week with Raven; and, of course, spells and magickal advice at the shop where I now have a regular part-time position - Saturdays & Mondays with an extra day thrown in here and there. It's just perfect and a dream come true after years in medical offices. Resident witch - what a great position, LOL! And that's what my week has in store for me! Hope yours is magickally wonderful too!

Rough Week!

Whoa! What a week I have had!!! Woke up Monday morning to a note that a friend's mom had passed after a struggle with cancer. I posted a small tribute to her previously. The next email was from another friend who had moved to Texas. She had, we thought, successfully battled breast cancer a few years ago. She was in the hospital and had been told that there was cancer in her liver, lungs and bones. I immediately sent out a call to all the Reiki practitioners, healers and witches to send healing and energy. Latest note, she is home and the prognosis, with chemo, etc. looks good. X! Monday evening Mike received a call; his mother's cousin, whom he had seen the week before, had passed away! He was quite elderly, but still getting around and seemed to be well. Good grief, I think I've had enough.

I have suffered from anxiety since childhood and these sorts of events - normal life, I know - always knock me down. Luckily for me, being the big girl I am, I bounce pretty easily! Still, it has been a difficult week and thanks to close friends, my darling Mike (the man has the patience of a saint!) and Reiki, meditation, etc., I'm  hanging in there. Still, I'm feeling a bit like I want to run away to some magical place where I don't have to deal with my feelings. Oh ho, you say - me too! Not a good idea. But... life goes on, anxiety passes. After all, I'm a mermaid - I ride that wave and get along.

In other news, happier news, I have been keeping busy - stitching, reading, cooking, working at the crystal shop. Those crystals certainly take care of me! The energy of the shop is soothing, peaceful, healing. And, of course, there is my friend and boss, Sandy, and co-worker, Lucky, who can talk one through anything. Thank goodness for friends and a great husband. 

A couple of weeks ago Mike and I drove upstate to visit a friend who was visiting her boyfriend - they are both 81 and had dated in high school, but married others, lost them and found each other again! We had a great visit and they took us to a strawberry farm where I bought a mess of berries - strawberry time in Florida - and made some jam.

Now, for me, jam making has become a sort of Zen-like meditative experience, I love doing it and it leaves me with this wonderful feeling. I mean, just looking at the beautifully colored jars - ahhhh!  And, of course, the results are always good, but this batch - DELICIOUS! I'm not sure there will be any left for Christmas gifts!

I  participated in the River of Stones project during January. I sent in five stones and one was accepted and posted to the Handful of Stones blog on February 8th. One of the five not accepted, actually my favorite, was about stitching:

Read and reading some books, as usual: Recommended by one of the Austen blogs I follow, Syrie James' Nocturne, which was good but not as good as her other two books, The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen and Dracula, My Love, which I recently read. I very much enjoyed India Black by Carol Karr, a mystery about a Victorian madam (yes, that kind of madam!) blackmailed into assisting Her Majesty's government in retrieving some important diplomatic documents from the French. Mystery writer Vicki Lane (a very favorite author) describes the novel as... "a kind of Fanny Hill meets Nancy Drew - through a world Dickens would have known." I agree and am hoping to read more adventures of India and her handsome spy sidekick. 

I also discovered, at my local library, The Coffeehouse Mysteries by Cleo Coyle. Holiday Grind was a light and enjoyable mystery. I'm going to read the others in this series. Cleo is the pen name for Alice Kimberly and her husband. Alice writes the Haunted Bookshop Mysteries, which are fun to read - if murder and mayhem can be fun and Alice achieves that!

So, right now I am embroiled in the antics of caterers Bernie & Libby Simmons as they try to solve the murder of Anabel Cobert in A Catered Birthday Party by Isis Crawford. This is another series I will be reading. Both of these series include lots of recipes, and I'm talking really good recipes, just like the Hannah Swenson Mysteries - recently read Cream Puff Murder and was as fascinated by the recipes as the story! For chocoholics, the Chocoholic Mysteries by JoAnna Carl, packed with chocolate trivia as well as a good mystery - most recent read, the Chocolate Pirate Plot. This mystery reading goes on while working on my Elizabeth Gaskell challenge.

All of this reading, cooking and stitching was squeezed in with the usual potion brewing, spell casting, tarot reading and ritual work of a witch. As you can read, I've been busy and all that busyness makes dealing with the other stuff a bit easier. The pleasures of needle and thread, books, cooking and home...

Merry, Merry!!!

 

So merry, merry, happy Christmas - actually it is now the day after! Last night was our annual Christmas Eve open house and we had a wonderful time, as usual. Good friends gathering to celebrate and just be together - it's the best! And... we ate!!! Antipasto - ham, mortedalla, salami, pepperoni, chicken, provolone, spinach dip, black olive and garlic dip with crackers & veggies sticks, lasagna, pumpkin tiramisu, rum cake, pizzelles, mulled cider, wine, coffee. We ate, laughed, drank, laughed, talked and laughed again, all night.


I also made eggnog from scratch - oooooh! Good stuff when homemade. Simmered eggs, milk and a small amount of sugar to about 165 degrees, then added a mixture of more milk and cream as well as a touch of vanilla extract and freshly grated nutmeg. Since it didn't make enough for the whole gang, I fed it to my friend who just had gastric bypass surgery a month ago - nutritious with all those eggs and milk. The rest I selfishly kept for Mike and myself!!! It is not difficult to make, a little time consuming and well worth it. I found the recipe at one of the Jane Austen blogs I follow.


No one could locate the pickle ornament on the tree so I had to show them where it was. They all tried, I'll give them that, but no one found it. I gave them little goodies as prizes anyway.


Mike and I ate yule log after midnight, then looked in our stockings to find those little toys that you play catch with, a little basket with a popper in it to shoot a small plastic ball across the room or up in the air and catch it in the basket again. We played catch, laughing and making more noise than we should have until three AM!!! He still woke me by seven, asking if it was Christmas yet and we then proceeded to open gifts.
He gave me a wonderful set of apothecary jars for my herbs and potions, two needlework books, Connecticut Needlework, Women, Art & Family, 1740-1840 by Susan Schoelwer and Jane Bostocke, The Rest of the Story by Eileen Bennett,  along with a few other goodies. He got new boxers, soft and flannel, some cologne, DVDs, a very nice copy of Gulliver's Travels, among a few other things. A good haul of fun stuff considering we really have everything we need most in life, but... it wouldn't be Christmas without a few little presents to unwrap.


Today was a quiet day, reading my new needlework books - which I have to make mention about and Mike watching movies - including A Christmas Story, one of our favorites. I knew I was getting those books because I ordered them myself. Mike asked me what I would like and I mentioned them,  so we went on line together and ordered them from The Scarlet Letter (www.scarlet_letter.com) on the 21st - nothing like waiting until the last minute. Well... the books arrived on Christmas Eve!!!!!! I couldn't believe it and, of course, sent off a little note of thanks to Marsha. I had to wait until today to look at them though, but that was alright, I was so busy yesterday. This evening I have been stitching one of the little motifs from the Bostocke sampler; Eileen includes a little chart in the back of her book. I also have some other charts from the sampler that I found on line. That sampler is the first and, I believe, oldest signed and dated piece ever found. Lots of blackwork, which I love, as well as a section of motifs.


Last night, I also celebrated all the Mother Goddesses, but especially Asherah, who seems to be making Herself known to me lately, tapping me on the shoulder and sending me information from various places. We will see where that leads. Tonight, I found some information about Her in a place I have looked many times before, but never noticed these particular bits.


So, here it is, the witching hour and I have a little fire in the fireplace, candles glowing, the scent of bayberry and evergreen in the air. Tomorrow the temperature will only rise to about the mid 60s - I know, it's probably much colder where you are, but this is South Florida!!! Tomorrow night 32-36 degrees . A good thing I have flannel nighties, quilts and afghans to cover us! (Too many exclamation points??? I can't help it, I'm still in a state of excitement!)


Well, we have friends joining us tomorrow night to finish the holiday leftovers, so more fun. I hope your past couple of days were as delightful as mine. Here's to many joyful moments for you and yours!

Halloween Stitch!

A little stitch for Halloween - very cute, if I say so myself! The design is from the September/October 2010 issue of Just Cross Stitch, By the Full Moon designed by Tracy Horner of Ink Circles. I used DMC floss instead of the recommended Gentle Arts threads. Along with it are a few of the witches from my collection. The witch on the motorcycle is actually a salt and pepper shaker! The two on the opposite side are reproductions of vintage pieces, the witch on the pumpkin is a candy holder. Most of the witches are part of my every day decor and not just for Halloween. I like having them around and they are everywhere ;-).


Preparing for the big day, ritual at Rhiannon's with Raven and myself. It is also Rhiannon's birthday so we will have a little birthday celebration as well. Honoring the ancestors of both our blood and our path is an important part of our ritual, reconnecting with those who have moved on, sweet sadness and celebration.


I just finished making a huge bowl of guacamole as one of Mike's customers gave us a bucketful of Florida avocados from his trees. They are at just-perfect ripeness for eating, so the next few days will include plenty of salads with slices as well as the guac! Nutty, buttery, delicious! Tonight, turkey burgers with, yes you guessed it, guacamole!!! If you're in the area, do stop by for a snack - if you can get Mike to share - he's very greedy with my guacamole!


Alright, that's enough of that, the house needs tidying, there's stitching to do and I have a few potions to brew, so back to the cauldron!

Flying By & Checking In

So... here I am, still with my mother near Tampa. My aunt, who has been caring for her since the surgery on August 24th, left last Monday to go home. I will likely head home early next week. My mother is doing well. I took her out today and checked out a needlework shop in Largo that I have not visited before.


The Crazy Framer & Cross Stitch Store, located at 9204 Ulmerton Road in Largo, Florida, has quite a nice selection of goodies for all stitchers. They do framing too, as the name implies and they have one of those special cutting machines for mats that can do all sorts of neat designs. I will bring something up and let them frame it next time I'm here - which will likely be sooner than later. Believe it or not, fifteen years ago I designed and then stitched a small sampler for our 15th wedding anniversary. It has never been framed and sits wrapped in tissue paper with some other unframed stitching. High time - another fifteen years has gone by - I got it framed!!!


I am planning to visit Enchanted Earth in Dunedin tomorrow so I can say hello to some favorite folks. Great witch shop with lots of goodies too.


I've been cooking, stitching, reading and chattering away with my mother. I am working on an old Shepherd's Bush design, Pumpkin Stew, which I started YEARS ago and just never finished. It is almost done, don't know why I never finished it. I brought a couple of other old unfinished pieces too, along with two new designs which will be holiday gifts.


Magically speaking - lots of healing work and affirmations - for myself mostly, but my mother and a few others. Healing for the healer - very important!

Road Trip!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lucky and I were off to Palm Beach Gardens yesterday, to visit Always In Stitches, a needlework shop. I hadn't been there in many, many years and was delighted with our visit. We had a lovely browse, chose a number of items we couldn't live without - I know, I know, we both have enough stitching supplies, charts and other accoutrements to last several lifetimes if we did nothing else but stitch! However, those stitchers among my gentle readers will understand perfectly. But I promise - no more stash for a while. (Fingers crossed!)

Here are the obtained goods:

Beautiful Finishing from Victoria Sampler, finishing biscornus, including the amazingly lovely 15 sided biscornu! Also the chart, Laura's Embroideries, by Coeur de Lin (Marie Suarez) which I have seen on line and really wanted. It's an enchanting little stitcher surrounded by her sewing supplies and an alphabet. And yes! Yet another TWO!!! pair of scissors; the red handled pair look like a green man image of sorts with a nifty little leather case. The other pair, preemies, those tiny scissors I adore, with a very pretty handle - entwined roses - called Eizabeth 1 Scissors! How could I resist, especially when Lucky brought them to my attention - after I had already paid for my purchases.

Beautiful 40 count linen which I have been waiting to find, because my stash of that count is low. I've been stitching on 40 count as much as possible - don't know when the old eyes will say "enough!!!"  LOL. My favorite, Vintage Autumn Gold, an overdyed, which I have used on a few pieces previously; Vintage River Willow (oooh!) along with Park City Blend - both also overdyed; and finally, Lambswool (not overdyed) but another favorite which I haven't found before in 40 count. Two kits, a little witch at her cauldron with everything needed to make an ornament and The Sweetheart Tree's Blackberries on Gingham Biscournu Pincushion - love the beaded blackberries and can't wait to stitch them. I also bought the chart for the matching scissor fob, of course, which came with the beads!

We were then off, chattering all the way, for a quick bite to restore us, a visit to the shop owned by a friend, Nature's Emporium, a metaphysical shop extraordinaire in Coral Springs, where we sat and chatted with the owner, a very good friend, Sandy. She and her husband, Frank, joined us for dinner, our usual Flo's Filet, at Longhorne.

  

Later, a little magick, iced coffee and more laughing and chatter! A truly fun and wonderful day!

Friends are the most important ingredient in the recipe of life!

A Lovely Long Weekend

This past weekend was a lovely, but busy three day mini-vacation. We celebrated our thirtieth wedding anniversary (oh my goddess, I can't believe it is that long!) on the 31st which I commemorated with the above little stitch designed by Beth Twist at Heartstring Samplery (http://thetwistfamily.blogspot.com/). I made a little cushion with it to hang on the connubial couch. I love reading Beth's blog and her designs are wonderful.

However, before the anniversary I had other adventures. On Saturday an old friend, Ruby, brought a , now, new friend, Sabrina, to visit. We went out to lunch, visited a couple of the local metaphysical shops and then went back to  Toadstool Condo for tea and lots of chatter. Sunday was spent finishing both the little anniversary cushion and the "At Pemberley" piece designed by The Sampler Girl. That will also be stitched into a cushion - I'm running out of wall space! In the evening I was off in the Strega-mobile to Miami to Ruby's home for a dedication ritual. A lovely evening, a lovely ritual.

Tomorrow night, tarot reading for a few of the girls from school - everyone has love issues, sigh! I only have another week and I will graduate, then just studying for my state board in about a month. I'm definitely ready to finish although I will miss being with everyone I've grown close to over the last nine months.

As for this week - more magic, mayhem and a little potion brewing then off to the hair show in Orlando, another three day weekend!

How many scissors???

I was curious about how many pairs of embroidery scissors I actually have. After all, I just displayed my newest pair in yesterday's stash update and I await the arrival of my spiderweb scissors. Gentle reader, thirteen pairs, soon to be fourteen! Should I hang my head in shame? Should I admit to an addiction, obsession or madness? Certainly not!!! I know that in the world of embroideresses everywhere, there are many just like me!!!
